The Dodge Magnum Starter is an electric motor assembly that serves to convert battery power into mechanical motion in order to crank the engine and start combustion. Encased in a small enclosure, the device employs a solenoid mounted externally and connected to the battery through heavy gauge wire. When the ignition key is turned to START, the solenoid energizes internal field coils along with the rotating armature. The armature is turned by the electromagnetic force, which in turn drives a small gear that meshes with the flywheel or flexplate ring gear, which then turns the crankshaft. As soon as the engine starts running, an overrunning clutch disengages the drive gear from the engine to avoid damage. The control circuit has a relay and a safety switch that allows engagement only when the transmission is in neutral or park or the clutch pedal is depressed in manual versions. Some units have a gear reduction Starter arrangement, which positions reduction gears between the armature and drive to increase torque without enlarging the motor. The Dodge design keeps the Starter compact and ruggedly built for the Magnum platform. The Starter housing encloses bearings that are the foundation for smooth armature rotation. The Dodge Magnum features an effective system to ensure engine starting. In general, the Dodge Magnum Starter is powerful and reliable.

Dodge Magnum Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to Maintain a Starter Motor on Dodge Magnum?
    A:
For starter motor maintenance, first cut off the negative Battery Cable and secure the Steering Wheel in place. Lift and support the vehicle and after that, remove the underbody splash shield. After that, disconnect the electrical line from the starter and remove the lower intermediate steering shaft using its bolts, also taking out the upper one next. Remove the bolts, wiring clip and release the starter forward and down so you can pull it around the exhaust and past the intermediate steering shaft to take it out of the vehicle. During installation, put the starter over the transmission and exhaust and direct it upward towards the engine. Slide the plastic retainer into the starter dust shield, so that its TOP mark faces downward and snap it onto the engine block. Fix the starter and screw its bolts in place, but only to 54.2 N.m (40 ft. lbs.). Attach the wire back to the starter, match the flat spots inside the Intermediate Shaft to those inside the extension shaft and insert the shaft into the extension with the holes in line. Loosely attach the extension to the intermediate shaft with the pinch bolt, then tighten it to 43 N.m (32 ft. lbs.). After that, install the underbody splash shield, drop the vehicle down, remove the steering wheel holder and attach the negative battery cable.
  • Q:
How to Service and Repair a Starter Motor on a 2.7L Engine on Dodge Magnum?
    A:
Before you do anything, take out and isolate the negative battery cable from the battery. Attach a Steering Wheel lock which holds your steering wheel in place, straight ahead, then lift up your car with support. Get rid of both the underbody splash shield and the starter assembly. After that, take out the intermediate steering shaft center bolt and divide the upper and lower shafts. Unplug the starter from the battery, take out the three mounting bolts and pull the wiring clip off. Pull and lower the starter, strapping it up around the exhaust, checking it is clear of the intermediate steering shaft and then remove it.
