To service and repair the backing plate, the wheel and tire assembly with the brake drum must be removed, followed by the brake shoe assembly. Next, take the parking brake cable off the parking brake lever, compress the parking brake cable retainer tabs and push the retainer and cable through the support plate. Remove the wheel cylinder from the support plate by disconnecting the brake line at the wheel cylinder. Next, remove the axle shaft, then remove the bolts that connect the support plate to the axle and take out the support plate. To install, a bead of silicone sealer should be applied around the axle mounting surface of the support plate before installing it on the axle flange and tightening the attaching bolts to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). Apply silicone sealer around the mounting surface of the wheel cylinder. Install the wheel cylinder and install the brake line in the wheel cylinder. Next, the parking brake cable is installed in the support plate and then the axle shaft. Attach the cable of the parking brake on the lever of the secondary shoe and install the brake shoes on the support plate, adjusting them with a brake gauge against the drum. To finalize, put the brake drum and wheel and tire assembly followed by bleeding the brakes.
