You should put the transmission into PARK, raise up the vehicle and release the parking brake to start working on the shift cable. Release the cable eyelet by the transmission manual shift lever and withdraw the cable adjuster from its place on the bracket. Lower the car, remove the insulation pad covering the dash panel and then get rid of the grommet from within the dash panel. Disable the air bag and remove any parts that get in your way and then remove the gearshift cable and BTSI from the column, disconnect their wiring connector and pull the cable inside the vehicle through the entry in the dash panel. Take the gearshift cable out from the vehicle. For installation, send the transmission cable part of the shift lever through the dash opening and put the cable grommet into the opening as well. Make sure the retaining ears are grasped by the bracket while you connect the end of the cable to the center of the shift lever. Return the car to a lifted position, put the manual lever of the transmission into PARK and spin the prop shaft to verify that the transmission is truly in PARK. Run the gearshift cable through the mounting bracket for the transmission, snap its retaining ears into the bracket and fit the other end on the ball stud of the manual shift arm. Ease the vehicle down, press the cable adjustment lock tab on the outside until it is locked, test the function of the transmission range sensor and alter the gearshift cable and BTSI assembly as needed.
