To carry out servicing or repair of the backing plate, remove the wheel and tire assembly with the brake drum and then the brake shoe assembly. Following that, remove the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever by compressing the tabs on the parking brake cable retainer and pushing the retainer and cable through the support plate. Remove the brake line from the wheel cylinder and detach the wheel cylinder from the support plate. Next, remove the axle shaft, then remove the bolts securing the support plate to the axle, and finally, remove the support plate. To install the support plate, apply a bead of silicone sealer around its axle mounting surface and install it on the axle flange, tightening the attaching bolts to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). After that, apply silicone sealer on the mounting surface of the wheel cylinder and install the wheel cylinder and the brake line in the wheel cylinder. The parking brake cable should be installed in the support plate, and the axle shaft. The cable for the parking brake is connected to the lever of the secondary shoe. The brake shoes are assembled on the support plate. The shoes are then adjusted to sit correctly with the drum using a brake gauge. Finally, install the brake drum and wheel and tire assembly and bleed the brakes.
