Single Cardan Universal Joints cannot be serviced themselves; when any component is worn or leaking, you must replace the unit as a whole. The next step is removing the propeller shaft. Carefully tap the outside of the bearing cap assembly, using a soft drift, to loosen the snap ring so you can then remove the snap rings from both sides of the yoke. Fit the bearing cap into the box-shaped yoke, screw the yoke into the arbor press or hold it in a vise, so the cap is tilted upward, grease fitting in front. Press a socket that fits around the upper bearing cap's opening into this cap to release the lower bearing cap from its grip on the yoke. If the bearing cap won't come out when you pull, tap on the area near the bearing cap to help dislodge it. With the yoke upside down, tighten the open hole cross and press the end of the cross until the remaining opposing bearing cap releases. Install the cross or bearing cap in a straight line to stop the walls of the yoke bore from being scored. Prior to assembly, put extreme pressure N.L.G.I. Grade 1 or 2 grease into the ends of the yoke bores. If your cross comes with a lube fitting, hang it in the yoke so that the fitting points up. Set a bearing cap on the trunnion and adjust it so the needle bearings stay upright in the yoke bore. Push the bearing cap into the yoke bore until you can add a snap ring and then insert the snap ring. Work on the opposite bearing cap as well and if the joint is not flexible, tap the yoke softly with a soft hammer to fit the needle bearings. If your boat is equipped, put some grease into the lube fitting before reassembling the propeller shaft.
