Jeep Compass own Axle Shaft's main job is to transmit power from the differential to the drive wheels, permitting them to turn separately allowing the ground beneath the vehicle to grip or stick to it more effectively when the vehicle turns. Normally made from strong and sturdy steel, these axle shafts bear the challenges of different types of road terrains. Jeep Compass models employ halfshafts containing splined ends for connection to the differential and the wheel hubs. This design enables power to be transferred effectively subject to the fact that the vehicle has independent suspension system. - Q: How to Service and Repair the Axle Shaft and CV Boot on Jeep Compass?A:When servicing or repairing a Constant Velocity Joint Boot, take the vehicle apart and pull the halfshaft assembly with the bad boot off. After that, remove the big clamp from the CV joint housing and the smaller clamp from the interconnecting shaft, both of which secure the CV sealing boots. Get rid of the boot from the outer CV joint housing and push it down the center shaft. Clean off grease to show the outer CV joint and shaft that is connected to it. Put the shaft into a vise, with protective covers protecting it and use a soft-faced hammer to sharply tap the CV joint housing end to dislodge it from the circlip inside the shaft. Release the outer CV joint from the interconnecting shaft by sliding it off and tap it off if that helps. Before removing the boot, pull off the bigger circlip on the shaft. It is important to check the outer CV joint assembly and interconnecting joint for major wear; if there is too much wear evident, having to replace the entire halfshaft assembly because the connecting parts are not replaceable.
- Q: How Are Axle Shaft and CV Boot Materials Selected and Installed on Jeep Compass?A:The boots for the tripod joints inside the turbo are made from silicone for high temperatures and Hytrel plastic for normal temperatures. The new boot you install should be the same material as the one that was previously there. Insert the inner tripod joint seal boot retaining clamp over the interconnecting shaft first, followed by the replacement inner tripod joint sealing boot so that its raised bead fits over the groove in the shaft. Care should be taken, since the rollers might slip off during installation. Following that, put the spider onto the shaft, making sure the chamfer goes toward the shaft. The spider assembly must be put on the shaft further than needed to insert the spider retaining snap ring which can be tapped in with a brass drift to secure it, but without touching the outer tripod bearings. See that the snap ring is all the way inside the groove at the end of the interconnecting shaft. Portion out half of the grease in the seal boot service package into the tripod housing and the other half into the sealing boot. Place the tripod housing onto the spider and move it up until it covers both. Attach the inner tripod joint seal boot clamp at the center of the sealing boot and use clamp C-4975A to hold it, turning the nut so the jaws are tight against the seal. A stretched or dimpled seal will not work; use equal pressure to restore its shape and shape it by hand. Place the seal boot into the tripod holding slot and make sure to install the boot retaining clamp equally on all sides. Before you clamp the inner joint, put a trim stick inside the tripod next to the sealing boot, then press it against the tripod housing to avoid harm. Put an edge trim stick between the soft rubber section and the tripod housing in a Hytrel sealing boot. Move the inside joint on the halfshaft so that the boot sits properly and delete the trim stick after that. If using the crimp type clamp, fit the sealing boot onto the tripod housing over Clamp C-4975A and make sure the jaws are closed when you finish tightening it. A low profile latching boot clamp can be latched in place with the Snap-On YA3050 tool. Take care to reconnect the halfshaft that was waiting for new boots back to the auto.
