How to remove the Backing Plate from the brake on Jeep Compass?

To remove the brake backing plate, first use a brake pedal holding tool to depress the brake pedal past its first inch of travel, holding it in that position to isolate the master cylinder from the brake hydraulic system and prevent brake fluid from draining. Next, raise and support the vehicle, then remove the three wheel mounting nuts and the tire and wheel assembly. Access and remove the drum brake shoes from the support plate. Position a 10 mm box wrench over the retainer fingers on the end of the parking brake cable housing, compress the retaining fingers with the wrench, and pull the cable housing out of the support plate. After that install the hub and bearing, support plate, spacer, as an assembly onto the trailing link. Replace the mounting bolts or clean and apply Mopar(R) Stud AND Bearing Mount Adhesive, or equivalent, on the threads of the original mounting bolts (the bolts can be reused) before installing the four bolts that secure the hub and bearing, support plate, and spacer to the trailing link to 105 Nm (77 ft. lbs.). The cable housing should be pushed further to the rear until the cable retainer fingers snap into the brake support plate. If fitted with a wheel speed sensor, install the sensor head into the rear of the hub and bearing. Secure the wheel speed sensor head with wheel speed sensor head mounting screw. Tighten screw to 10 Nm (89 in. lbs.). Attach the wheel cylinder to the brake support plate and tighten its screws to 13 Nm (115 in. lbs.). Connect the brake tube to the wheel cylinder. Tighten the tube nut to 17 Nm (150 in. lbs.). Use Mopar(R) Brake Lubricant or equivalent to lubricate the shoe contact areas on the support plate and anchor, and inspect the brake shoes before installation. Put the drum brake shoes and drum in place, adjusting the shoes as necessary. Put the tire and wheel assembly and tighten the wheel mounting nuts in place to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Gradually rotate the rear wheel to check that the brake drum lightly drags on the shoes, lower the vehicle and remove brake pedal holding device. When necessary, bleed the affected wheel cylinder and conduct a road test to check brake operation.
