The Starter Relay controls the flow of battery power to the starter solenoid so the engine can crank. This Starter Relay is within the starter control circuit and is activated by either an ignition switch or the Powertrain Control Module. In the Jeep electrical architecture of the Grand Cherokee, when the key is turned to START, the device receives a low-current signal. Subsequently, it moves to its on position, which sends a higher-current voltage from the battery to the solenoid, to engage the starter motor with the flywheel. The Starter Relay will only be on as long as the key stays in START and will go off when the signal stops.
