The Jeep Grand Cherokee Radiator Fan Relay controls the power supply that turns the cooling fan on and off to give the radiator extra airflow. The Radiator Fan Relay receives a signal when engine coolant reaches a pre-set temperature or A/C is switched on the internal contacts close so 12-volt current goes through to the electric fan motor mounted in the shroud assembly. When the temperature of the coolant drops below the switch point, the Radiator Fan Relay opens the circuit stopping the fan and saving energy. To make sure that enough air moves through the fins and tubes of the radiator, the component through this cycling of the fan during slow driving or idling prevents heat build-up enough to cause the engine in Jeep Grand Cherokee to overheat. The Radiator Fan Relay supports the electric fan that is applied on nearly all modern vehicles and not the old style thermal clutch type mechanical belt driven fan. Jeep Grand Cherokee models do not have any alternative styles or variations in materials for the Radiator Fan Relay, so this description pertains to one confirmed configuration in the Jeep Grand Cherokee range.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Radiator Fan Relay Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Where is the Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) Radiator Fan Relay located, and How to remove and install it on Jeep Grand Cherokee?
    A:
The relay for the Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) cooling fan is present behind the bumper fascia below the right headlamp. To remove the reservoir, first, remove the front bumper and grill assembly. Next, remove one support bolt near the front of the reservoir followed by two bolts mounting the reservoir. Next, remove the reservoir from the car to gain access to the vacuum hose and disconnect it from the rear fitting on the reservoir. To disconnect the relay, remove the connector of the relay and then remove the two relay mounting bolts. To install the relay, place it to the body and install two bolts and tighten to 3Nm (25 inch lbs.) torque. Reattach the vacuum hose to the reservoir and electrical socket to the relay. Before reinstalling the front bumper and grill assembly, fix the reservoir and torque the two bolts to a 3 Nm (25 inch lbs.)tension.
