The Jeep Patriot Crankshaft Position Sensor is a type of electronic monitoring sensor that measures the position and speed of the crankshaft. It relays information about the crankshaft's position to the powertrain control unit, allowing for the optimal timing of the ignition and fuel injection among other calibration settings. The Crankshaft Position Sensor continuously reporting crankshaft phase enables the module to synchronize spark and fuel delivery. Without the feedback from this Crankshaft Position Sensor, the wrong fuel and spark events occur. A failed unit can prevent the Jeep Patriot from starting and can even cause the engine to stall when driving. On a Jeep Patriot, the mounting points can be on the crank pulley, flywheel, camshaft, or crankshaft, which allows the sensor to read rotating targets without making contact. Generally, Crankshaft Position Sensor designs employ inductive, Hall-effect, magnetoresistive, or optical detection methods. All designs translate changes in the magnetic or optical field into electrical signals to represent the rotation of the crankshaft. The inductive versions are passive, while the Hall-effect and magnetoresistive versions operate in static magnetic fields. Finally, the optical versions provide edge recognition, but they are more sensitive to fouling. Due to heat, vibration, and corrosion, the Crankshaft Position Sensor may get damaged, which may lead to rough idle, misfire, hesitant acceleration, or hot restart problems in a Patriot engine. Therefore, the current units are sealed against intrusion by fluid to protect the powertrain.

Jeep Patriot Crankshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to install the Crankshaft Position Sensor on Jeep Patriot?
    A:
For the crankshaft position sensor installation, check O-ring damage and lubricate it with engine oil. Next, install the crankshaft position sensor by twisting it into position. Secure with the crankshaft position sensor bolt and tighten to 9 Nm (80 in. lbs.). Following this, the sensor's electrical connector was locked and connected. The heat shield is attached using one nut and with the two bolts. Install the heat shield with the bolt that attaches the upstream O2 sensor wire harness and the crankshaft position sensor wire harness retainer. After that, install the air cleaner body. Connect the negative battery cable. Finally, install the engine cover.
