CV Boot of Jeep Patriot vehicles is an important part that is meant to safeguard the vital Constant Velocity (CV) joints that play a significant role of transmitting power from the transaxle to wheel assembly. This flexible rubber or plastic boot holds the required lubricant for the CV joints and still excludes the intrusion of grimes to help the CV joints work premier. Jeep Patriot models make use of different types of CV joints, the outer ends use rivet Rzeppa joint while the inner ends use plunging joints. The outer joint travels at more acute angles whereas the inboard joints are designed to allow for changes in the length of the shaft due to suspension motion. It is essential to inspect the CV Boot often and any sign of crack or tear in its covering will indicate a bad CV joint thus affecting the vehicle's operation.

Jeep Patriot CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Are CV Boot Materials Selected and What Is the Replacement Process on Jeep Patriot?
    A:
For high temperatures close to the exhaust system, the Tripod joints are sealed with silicone rubber boots. Hytrel plastic is used for normal-temperature sealing in other places. You must use a sealing boot from the same material as the spread that has been removed. Slide on the holding clamp for the tripod seal boot onto the shaft, then slide the replacement inner tripod joint seal boot onto the shaft with its raised bead fitting into the groove on the shaft. Mount the spider assembly onto the interconnecting shaft while facing the chamfer side toward the shaft to make sure the spider retaining snap ring installs completely. If required, use a brass drift to tap the spider body so it installs fully, without damaging the outer tripod bearings. Put the snap ring securely in the groove on the interconnecting shaft's end. Fill the 'body' of the tripod housing with half of the boot servicing and fill the sealing area with the rest. Put the tripod housing along with the spider assembly and then move it over the shaft that connects them. Fit Clamp C-4975-A over the inner tripod joint seal boot and shaft to lock them securely in place. If you see or feel that the seal's circle is dimpled, stretched or not even, take aim and shape it using your hands. Fit the sealing boot into the tripod retaining groove and make sure you attach the seal boot retaining clamp evenly as well. Insert a trim stick between the tripod and sealing boot and hold it level against the tripod to prevent the boot from being punctured when venting the inner tripod joint. Use the tripod joint on the halfshaft to match the sealing boot end to end, then take off the trim stick. For a crimp boot clamp, place it around the mating hole on the camera base and use Clamp C-4975-A to tighten the bolt until the ends of the clamp are together. The Snap-On(R) YA3050 allows you to securely latch a low profile latching type boot clamp. The final step is to reinstall the halfshaft that will be connecting to the new boot.
  • Q: How to Install a New CV Boot on Jeep Patriot?
    A:
Before anything else, fit the outer CV joint sealing boot (1), with its raised bead inside, into the groove on the interconnecting shaft (4). Once that is done, slide the channel fitting boot (2) down over the interconnecting shaft (4). Pull the end of the outer CV joint toward the center where the splines of the cross and the interconnecting shaft meet and start inserting the outer CV joint onto the shaft. Using a soft faced hammer, hit the end of the stub axle with the hub nut still attached, working it gently until the outer CV joint is completely seated on the interconnecting shaft and the cross inside the joint sits against the clip on the shaft. Put half of the supplied grease into the outer CV joint assembly housing and keep the other half to place into the sealing boot (4). Fit the boot to the shaft clamp and use Clamp C-4975-A to secure the boot, making sure the seal is stretched neither too much nor too little and there are no dimples; fix any small unevenness on the seal by hand. Then, place the outer CV joint boot (4) into its groove in the outer CV joint housing and slip it over the sealing boot retaining clamp (1). Grab the CV housing boot and seal it by clamping it on with the Clamp C-4975-A (3). Put the clamp over the bridge and tighten the nut until the jaws are touching. Once everything is good, position the halfshaft with the damaged boot onto the vehicle.
