The Ram Neutral Safety Switch is a sensor on the transmission that prevents the starter from working unless the gear selector is in Park or Neutral position, preventing accidental cranking of the car. When the Neutral Safety Switch requires replacement, park the Ram on a flat surface, apply the brake, and disconnect the battery. Follow the transmission case until the tiny plastic casing comes into view near a 2-wire plug. Locate its position, remove the plug and disconnect it, loosen the bolts, and slide off a worn Neutral Safety Switch. Put some oil on the seal lightly, align and press the new one on, tighten the bolts, and snap the harness home. Using the shifter, make sure the engine cranks only in Park or Neutral. Reconnect the battery, fire up the Ram, check the reverse lights, and take it for a short run.
