Q: How to Remove and Install a Crankshaft in an Engine on 2000 Chrysler Concorde?
A: The first thing to do is remove the engine from the car and have it permanently mounted on an engine stand. Remove the engine oil, remove the oil filter and then get rid of the oil pan and oil pick-up tube. After that, disconnect the bracket from the idler pulley on the accessory drive belt, as well as the upper intake manifold, cylinder head covers and timing chain cover. Take out the main timing chain, the crankshaft sprocket, the oil pump and the crankshaft rear oil seal retainer. After that, remove the structural windage tray. Turn the crankshaft until the connecting rod cap you plan to remove is in the way and remember to mark each connecting rod bearing cap, as they cannot be used differently. Be sure to use a permanent ink marker or scribe tool for marking and make sure to carefully remove the caps of the bearings on the connecting rod to not harm the crankshaft bearings. First, loosen the main bearing cap bolts and tie bolts and next, take out the main bearing caps without harming the crankshaft bearing surfaces. Take out the crankshaft from inside the cylinder block. While installing the main bearings, smear engine oil on the upper halves of the main bearings. One side of the washer should be aligned to the thrust surface. Crank the engine shaft forward, fit in the front thrust washer, turn it back and fit the rear thrust washer. Use engine oil to coat the lower main bearings, then put in the main bearings and caps, always greasing the bolts before they go in. Apply 20 Nm torque to the head cap bolts and turn them another One-quarter turn, check the crankshaft end play and add the connecting rods while watching side clearance. Set the windage tray in place, lubricate each bolt and tighten them to about 27 Nm by turning them a quarter turn further. Secure the main cap tie bolts to 28 Nm, fit the rear crankshaft oil seal retainer and oil seal and place the oil pump assembly, crankshaft sprocket, timing chain, timing chain cover, cylinder head covers, idler pulley bracket, oil pick-up tube and O-ring, oil pan, oil filter and oil dipstick tube, in that order. In the end, set up and screw the engine assembly, then fill the crankcase to the proper oil level.
