2000 Chrysler LHS Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: Can the Water Pump Be Replaced Without Discharging the Air Conditioning System on 2000 Chrysler LHS?
A: In every model, the water pump can be swapped out while still protecting the air conditioning system. Be sure not to remove the pressure cap when the system is pressurized and hot or you could get badly burned by coolant. Minor coolant leakage from the weep hole is common and is no cause for concern; significant deposits or constant flow, however, mean the shaft seal has failed and the water pump needs to be swapped out after careful diagnosis. Always start by taking out the coolant from the system. Following that, take off the accessory drive belts. The water pump is powered by the timing belt, so take out the necessary engine parts before you can replace the pump. Pull out the water pump mounting bolts, remembering where the longer one should go and remove the water pump from the engine. When assembling, clear the O-rings on both the pump and the cover, grease the O-ring with Mopar(R) Dielectric Grease or an equivalent, Slide a new O-ring over the water pump shaft and slip its groove over the water pump opening. Put the water pump on the engine, secure it with mounting bolts and tighten these bolts to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.). After replacing the belts, leave the hood open and then fill the cooling system.
