2000 Dodge Caravan Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Successfully Remove and Install a Camshaft on 2000 Dodge Caravan?
A: Taking off the cylinder head cover first is important, followed by the removal of both the camshaft position sensor and the camshaft target magnet. Then, get rid of the timing belt, the sprockets and the covers. The outside bearing caps should be identified as the first step in identifying the bearing caps in the rails. Bank the camshaft holders open one camshaft at a time, using the right fastener sequence, keeping in mind the left camshaft has wider spacing between its bearing faces. Before you take them out, make sure you know which camshafts they are. To measure camshaft end play, grease the camshaft journals, put the camshaft in without the cam follower assemblies, put in the rear cam caps and screw them on to the right torque. Choose a proper tool and move the camshaft as close to the rear as you can, then set the dial indicator to zero. Slide the camshaft forward until it touches its stopper and the end play travel should measure between 0.05 and 0.15 mm (0.002 and 0.010 inch). If end play is higher than it should be, inspect the cylinder head and the camshaft and replace them when needed. Make sure all pistons are below top dead center during your motorcycle installation. Before setting the cam followers and camshafts, lubricate every journal and follower on the camshaft. Make sure to place the right and left camshaft bearing caps No. 2-5 and right No. 6, then use an M6 fastener to tighten each to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.) in the right order. On the engine side, use Mopar Gasket Maker on No. 1 and left No. 6 bearing caps, then put on the outer bearing caps and tighten the M8 bolts to a setting of 24 Nm (215 in. lbs.). Before installing the seals, find bearings end cap needs to be installed. You should then place the camshaft seals, turn the timing belt and sprockets, put in the camshaft target magnet and the camshaft position sensor and reattach the cylinder head cover.
