2000 Dodge Dakota Fan Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Fan Clutch on 2000 Dodge Dakota?
A: The very first step in working on the fan clutch is to detach the negative battery cable. Remember to attach Adapter Pins 8346 on Special Tool 6958 to the pulley as you turn the mounting nut of the drive/fan assembly counterclockwise from the front, using Snap-On 36 MM Fan Wrench (SP346) and Snap-On Cummins Diesel Tool Set number 2017DSP. For now, do not remove the fan/viscous fan drive assembly from the vehicle or unbolt the fan blade assembly from the viscous fan drive. Then, pull out all the screws holding the upper fan shroud and take apart and remove the complete upper shroud and the fan blade/viscous fan drive. After taking out the viscous fan drive, make sure it stays in a vertical position so that no silicone fluid leaks into its bearing assembly and pollutes the lubricant. Don't try to remove the bolts from the water pump pulley, because it is spring loaded. Remove all four bolts holding the fan blade assembly to the viscous fan drive. Attach the fan blade assembly to the viscous fan drive, put the bolts in firmly at a torque of 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.), then continue with the next procedure. Place the fan blade and upper shroud in the vehicle, screw on the retaining screws for the shroud and connect the fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly to the water pump shaft. Lastly, link the negative battery cable back up.
