2000 Dodge Dakota Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Install and Service a Water Pump on a 2.5L Engine on 2000 Dodge Dakota?
A: In later models, the reverse rotating water pump is marked with the letter R in its back cover, while engines from earlier models can have a forward rotating pump; using the right pump is important to stop the engine from getting hotter than it should be. Air-conditioned vehicles with a water pump can have it removed without draining the AC and repair must be done on the whole assembly because the impeller presses onto the pump and bearing shaft. Initially, disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the entire cooling system. Then, take out the accessory drive belt and the power steering pump according to the right instruction. The correct way to deal with cooling system hoses is to use 6094 or HPC-20 tools designed for constant tension hoses and remember to have safety glasses on. Unbolt the lower radiator hose and heater hose from the fitting on the water pump, remove the four bolts, one of which is longer than the others and throw out the used gasket. When replacing the pump, fit the heater hose to the wet side of the new pump and seal the hose fitting with Mopar Thread Sealant With Teflon. Wipe the gasket mating surfaces and check for wear, then install the gasket so the silicone bead is on the water pump side and tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.); verify that the shaft spins without any difficulty. Link the radiator and heater hoses again, fix the water pump pulley onto its hub and lastly fit the power steering pump in place. Before starting the vehicle, check that the belt is installed correctly so the water pump doesn't turn in the wrong direction and leads to overheating. Next, top off the coolant in your vehicle, check for any leaks, reconnect the battery negative cable and turn on the engine while checking again for leaks.
