- Q: How to Remove and Install a Camshaft on 2000 Dodge Intrepid?A: Before you can remove the camshaft, take out the primary timing chain and the secondary chain tensioner bolts. During the manufacturing process, each camshaft bearing cap is permanently marked, this is noticeable on number one exhaust camshaft bearing marked "1E." Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts in reverse order and remove the caps after they are loose. Remove the camshafts, secondary chain and tensioner all together, then take out the camshaft chain from the camshafts. Regularly check the camshafts. During installation, locate the proper crankshaft position instead of rotating the timing chain to prevent valve or piston damage. Wrap the camshaft chain onto the cams with the plated side facing the front and make sure the dots on the cam spockets line up with each link. If you have already locked the camshaft tensioner, jump to the next part of the guide. If there are no lock pins, set the tensioner into a soft jaw vise and gradually compress it until a hole can be lined up so a threaded lock pin can be driven in with a punch driver. Connect the tensioner between the camshafts and chain, rotate the cams until the marks and plates point at 12:00, put in the cams, installing them into the cylinder head as you check their rocker arms are seating. Place the camshaft bearing caps on the head in the same places as before and tighten the cam bearings caps bolts gradually to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.). Put in the two secondary chain tensioner bolts and set them to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.), after which you can take out the locking pin from each of the chains. Place a dial indicator on the cylinder head, let the probe touch the camshaft's end, push the indicator to the back of its position, set it to zero and then move it forward to note how far it goes. Afterward, take care of installing the main timing chain.
