2000 Dodge Intrepid Drive Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service a Drive Belt on 2000 Dodge Intrepid?
A: You should take off the generator or power steering belt before servicing the drive belt. Turn the bolt that secures the tensioner with the loosening tool and the rocker arm pivot bolt without taking them off. Make use of a 1/2" drive breaker bar in the belt tensioner opening and rotate it counterclockwise until the belt comes off the pulleys, then slowing rotate the tensioner in the opposite direction to let go of spring load. Make sure the torsion spring has shifted over to the belt's position before installing the new belt. Holding the tensioner against the spring with a 1/2" breaker bar, counterclockwise, remove the locking bolt and then slowly let go of the tensioner. Remove the pivot bolt, tensioner and spring from the timing cover, then insert the spring arm into the new spot where the belt goes on the tensioner. After that, fit the torsion spring, tensioner and pivot bolt, but just tighten the pivot bolt by finger pressure initially. Counterclockwise pressure with the bar will allow you to install the locking bolt, then you can rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to attach the belt onto the pulleys. After releasing the tensioner, take out the breaker bar and let the belt naturally adjust due to the torsion spring. Also, tighten the generator/power steering belts tensioner locking bolt and pivot bolt to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) and slide the generator/power steering belt back into place. To service a used belt which has covered at least 500 miles, follow the same steps as for a new belt, except place the belt onto the pulleys with the tensioner rotated counterclockwise, install the used belt and tighten both the locking and pivot bolts to the same exact specifications. For removal, first unwind the tension and adjustment bolts, then take out the belt and for putting it back, tighten the adjusting bolt, put the belt around the pulleys and secure its locking nut.
