2001 Dodge Neon CV Boot Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair a CV Boot on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: Before you can take care of problems with the boot on the CV joint, you have to uninstall the halfshaft from the car. Get rid of both boot clamps that hold the CV joint ends, then remove the sealing boot from the interconnecting shaft. Get the outer CV joint exposed inside the boot, putting the interconnecting shaft in a vise to keep it supported and using a soft hammer, gently strike the boot to separate the outer CV joint from the circlip. Before taking the sealing boot off, take out the big circlip from the interconnecting shaft and pull the damaged boot off afterward. In case you find excessive tears on the outer CV joint assembly or the interconnecting joint, the entire halfshaft assembly should be changed, since none of the CV joint's parts are replaceable. Once you slide the new sealing boot onto the shaft, with the raised bead in place, line up the splines of the two joints and put the joint in place on the interconnecting shaft. Tap the stub axle (with nut on) with a soft-faced hammer until the outer CV joint is inserted fully into the circlip. Lubricate the CV joint assembly opening and the outer part of the boot with what remains from the grease. Get the sealing boot onto the interconnecting shaft using crimper Special Tool C-4975-A to avoid stretching or dimpling it and position it correctly. Secure the clamp on the CV joint housing with the crimper and install the halfshaft onto the vehicle again.
