2000 Dodge Neon Rocker Arm Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rocker Arm Assembly on 2000 Dodge Neon?
A: Service and repair of the rocker arm assembly should begin with lifting off the cylinder head cover and finding the rocker arm shaft assemblies before you unlatch them. Take out the fastening bolts on top, then pull off the rocker arm shafts from the cylinder head. Lay out the rocker arm spacers and retainers where they belong and then remove the bolts that fix the rocker arm assemblies to the shaft to disassemble them. Take off the rocker arms and spacers by sliding them off the shaft and keeping them together. Make sure the rocker arm does not have any scratches, wears or damage and change it if there is. Inspect the holes to see if the plastic is worn out and replace them if it is. A rocker arm shaft which carries lubricating oil, should be checked for clogged oil holes and cleaned as needed. Make sure to lubricate the rocker arms and spacers before you put them back on the shafts where they ended up. Set the crankshaft to 3 notches before Tdc before you put in the rocker arm shafts. Instead or afterward, fit the rocker arm/hydraulic lash adjuster assembly, so that the adjusters are full enough which allows for very little plunger travel when pressed. Should the plunger travel too far, add a little engine oil and pump it enough so that the rocker arm assembly travels up to make the scissor plate adjustment; if it does not fix the problem, replace it. Space the rocker arm and shaft assemblies on the engine so that the Notch is pointing up and toward the timing belt and fit the retainers back on the exhaust and intake shafts where they were. While fitting the intake rocker arm shaft assembly, don't allow the plastic spacers to cross the spark plug tubes, adjusting the angle of the shaft assembly without forcing it down. Screw the bolts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) in the renown sequence and put back the cylinder head cover. A clicking sound coming from the valve train may be caused by various things and rocker arms are the replacement for lash adjusters.
