2001 Dodge Neon Rocker Arm Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rocker Arm Assembly on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: Prior to working on or repairing the rocker arm assembly, bring the cylinder head cover out and pinpoint the rocker arm shaft assemblies first. Open the retaining fasteners and pull out the rocker arms from the head of the cylinder. Remember to save the spacers and retainers while disassembling the rocker arms and take off the attaching bolts on the rocker arms. Remove the rocker arms and spacers, while remembering and keeping track of their places on the shaft. See if the rocker arm shows scoring, wear or damage and if so, change it out. Inspect the positions where the rocker arms are fixed to the shafts and change them if they are worn. As the rocker arm shaft is used for oil travel, it's important to check the oil holes for blockages and clean them if necessary. Before installing the rocker arm shafts, move the crankshaft forward three notches before reaching true top dead center. Put some grease on the rocker arms and spacers and attach them to the shafts exactly as they were to begin with. Fit the rocker arm/hydraulic lash adjuster assembly and be sure that the adjusters have some oil inside which shows they've moved only a bit when pressed. If the plunger goes too far down in the cylinder, immerse the rocker arm assembly in engine oil and pump the valve until its travel has been taken up; if it still isn't fixed, put in a new assembly. Put the rocker arm and shaft assembly in place so that the Notch on the rocker arm shaft is pointing up and towards where the timing belt bolts to the engine and screw on the retainers as they were before. Be sure to adjust the intake rocker arm shaft assembly so its plastic spacers do not touch the spark plug tubes. Screw the bolts tight so that they reach 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) when tightened in the right sequence and then place the cylinder head cover into position.
