2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2000 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Make sure the front wheels are straight-ahead when you start servicing and repairing the rack and pinion. Detach and clamp the fluid hoses on the rack and pinion, loosen the coupler bolt from the steering equipment and slide the shaft off the gear. Mark both the pitman shaft and arm before you remove the pitman arm from the shaft with Puller C-4150A. After that, undo the rack and pinion retaining bolts and remove the rack and pinion from the vehicle. Place the rack and pinion along the frame rail, bolt it in and tighten them as recommended in the instructions. Put the steering coupler on the gear shaft, add the pinch bolt and tighten it to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.) torque. Attach the pitman arm and lift it until it is in the correct position on the triball. After, put in the washer and tighten the nut on the pitman shaft to 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.). Then, join the fluid hoses to the rack and pinion, tightening them to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.) and add more fluid if necessary.
