2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Starter Motor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Starter Motor on 2000 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before servicing the starter motor, unplug the battery's negative cable and lift the vehicle off the ground. Take out the nut and lock washer that are connecting the starter motor to the relevant joint on the clutch housing or torque converter assembly. With the gear inside the starter solenoid secured, remove the screw in the upper mounting head. On an automatic transmission, push the automatic transmission cooler tube bracket all the way over the tubes to permit the starter motor mount to be removed from the lower stud. Locate the starter motor so that the nose of the starter pinion housing is above the clutch or torque converter housing and is being supported by the car instead of the wire harness. Pull the nose downwards and lower the starter motor to remove the nut holding the battery positive cable wire harness connector to the solenoid battery terminal, then remove the connector eyelet and take out the battery positive cable wire harness connector from the solenoid terminal receptacle. When the starter motor is installed, put the cable wire end from the battery positive post into the solenoid's terminal on the starter motor side, to ensure the starter motor is supported while connected to power. Place the battery positive cable wire harness connector eyelet over the stud of the solenoid battery and fasten it with the given nut securely at 25 Nm (221 in. lbs.). Set the starter motor at the front of the clutch or torque converter housing, then if there is an automatic transmission cooler, push the bracket bracket for the cooler tube to the rear and lower into the upper hole on the starter motor's mounting flange. Put screws into the starter motor mounting flange and the lock washer loosely, then loosen the nut that secures the starter motor from the lower stud, as well, keeping everything just loose. Secure the upper bracket of the motor in place by tightening the mounting screw to 67.8 Nm (50 ft. lbs.) and the same torque for the nut under the motor. After that, take the vehicle to the ground and secure the negative battery cable back into place.
