2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Air Bag Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace a faulty or damaged driver-side Air Bag module on 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: To change the driver side air bag module, happily cut it off from battery negative and afterward, make sure you avoid the air bag trigger for two minutes. Put on rubber gloves, eye protection and a shirt that covers your arms when handling anything from an air bag module. First, remove the two screws holding the driver side air bag module from the underside of the steering wheel. Get access to the two rear wire harness connections by sliding the air bag module off to the side of the steering wheel. Unplug the horn tower wire harness connector from the other end of the horn switch feed wire connector, then carefully remove the air bag wire harness connector from its place in the air bag module. Lift the steering wheel so that you can remove the driver side air bag module. If the air bag deployes, first replace the Clock Spring and then look at the steering column. While installing the air bags, be sure there is no foreign object in the driver's air bag or trapped under the air bag cushion, since that could hurt the occupant during deployment. Do not paint your trim cover, since servicing of replacement covers is done in the original colors to protect their deployment response. Make sure the Clock Spring air bag wire harness connector reaches the air bag module connector receptacle and you should be able to hear an audible click. Securely seat the horn tower wire harness back into the connector, place the driver side air bag module within the steering wheel and check that all wire harnesses in the horn tower are not pressed in by the steering wheel. Finally, put in and secure the two driver side module mounting bolts to 10.2 Nm (90 in. lbs.), but do not plug in the battery negative cable at this stage.
