2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Wheel Hub Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the Wheel Hub on 286 RBI Axles on 2000 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: For 286 RBI Axles, begin service of the wheel hub by removing the wheel and tire, then the brake drum and axle shaft. Take the lock wedge and adjustment nut out with Socket DD-1241-JD and then remove the hub assembly to have the outer axle bearing slide out. Withdraw the inner grease seal and take out the grease seal and inner axle bearing, using Installer 5064 and Handle C-4171. With a brass drift or an appropriate tool, take out the bearing cups from the hub bore. To put in the bearings, make sure the axle bearings and the inside of the hub are clean with the proper cleaner. Then use Installer 8153 and Handle C-4171 to fit the bearing cups on the hub. Distribute lubricant all over the bearing cup surface and push the inner axle bearing into the hub. Use Installer 8152 and Handle C-4171 to fasten a new bearing grease seal and then check the bearing contact spots on the axle spindle tube for burrs or rough areas. If found, smooth them out and cover the spindle with a coating of NLGI, grade 2, EP-type multipurpose lubricant. Carefully avoid putting grease seal contact on the axle tube spindle threads while installing it. First, slip the hub onto the axle, next add the outer axle bearing and then secure the hub bearing adjustment nut using Socket DD-1241-JD. Turn the adjustment nut to a range of 163 - 190 Nm (120 - 140 ft. lbs.) while rotating the wheel, then lower it by 1/8 of a turn to provide the needed wheel bearing end play of 0.001 to 0.010 inch. Open the locking wedge and drop it into the small keyway on the spindle and the adjustment nut. You should also use the same precautions when installing the axle shaft, brake drum and wheel and tire assembly.
