2000 Dodge Ram 2500 Brake Disc Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an 8-Stud Brake Disc on 2000 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Service and repair the brake disc with 8 studs by lifting the vehicle, taking off the tire and taking out the wheel. After that, take out the hub extension mounting nuts and pull off the extension if it's equipped, before removing the brake caliper adapter assembly. Unfasten the cotter pin and hub nut from the end of the axle shaft, unplug the ABS wheel speed sensor wire under the hood and if you have it, remove the sensor from its connection in the frame and the steering knuckle. Turn the hub/bearing bolts away from the knuckle by 1/4 inch on each bolt, then tap them with a hammer to detach the hub/bearing. Remove the bolts holding the hub/bearing mount, as well as the hub/bearing. After taking the disc assembly, brake shield and spacer off the steering knuckle, press the wheel studs/hub extension studs out to remove the disc. If your car has this option, pull the wheel speed sensor off the hub bearing. You should first install the wheel speed sensor in the hub bearing, if that's available and after that, secure the disc onto the hub/bearing. Push the wheel studs/hub extension studs through the disc's back side and into the hub bearing flange. Spray or spread anti-seize material liberally onto the front drive shaft's splines. Insert the two rear, top and bottom disc hub bolts into the steering knuckle by facing them backward, so they extend out the front face. Put the hub spacer and brake shield on the bolts you just inserted, making sure if your car is equipped with a wheel speed sensor, the brake shield is on the hub as well. Set the disc hub in line with the drive shaft and push the shaft into the splines, ensuring the wheel speed sensor wire sits on the top side of the knuckle if it's present. Guide the bolt holes on the hub bearing flange to line up with the bolts already installed in the knuckle and turn the bolts into the bearing flange enough to secure the assembly. Add the last bolts and secure the hub/bearing bolts to 170 Nm (125 ft. lbs.). After setting up the washer and hub nut, tighten them to 245 Nm (180 ft. lbs.), then fit a new cotter pin into the hub nut and adjust the nut till the cotter pin opening aligns with the shaft opening. Put the brake caliper adapter in place and tighten its bolts to 285 Nm (210 ft. lbs.). Place the sensor wire around the steering knuckle and frame and then run the wheel speed sensor wire to under the hood and connect it. If the hub is fitted, add in the extension and nuts, tighten these to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.) and then put the wheel and tire assemblies in place. After that, lift away the support and bring the vehicle down to the floor, pressing the brake several times to seat the components properly while it's held in place.
