2000 Dodge Stratus Power Steering Hose Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Hose for Return Hose on 2000 Dodge Stratus?
A: When replacing the return hose, make sure to raise the vehicle, cover all exposed fitting ends and plug the open hose, pump and steering gear ports to stop dirt from getting in. Make sure no power steering fluid spills as you drain it and carefully remove the return hose so you don't damage the nipple. Drop down the front suspension crossmember with the aid of a jack to access the steering gear and be sure to mark where it was before you loosened it. Remove the return line from the power steering cooler and let out any residual fluid. When working on 2.4 liter vehicles, unclip the power steering bracket from the engine hose at the flange and remove the bolt from the cylinder head; on 2.5 liter vehicles, unclip both routing brackets. Undo the return hose from around the engine, place the new one in position and fill the steering gear port. Once you have put the hose behind the engine compartment, repeat the steps you followed when removing it and ensure to clean everything at the hose's ends. Change the O-ring in the steering gear fitting, lubricate it with power steering fluid and ensure the return hose is far from the exhaust and other parts when you connect it to the cooler lines. Set the hose up so that it isn't bent too tightly on its way to the reservoir and mount the routing brackets as needed. Raise the crossmember on the front suspension back to where it should be and then lower the vehicle. Slip the return hose onto the reservoir connection and use a clamp to fasten it. Turn on the engine for a short time, look at the fluid level and top it up as needed until it stays the same. Pump up the front tires, turn the engine on and roll the steering wheel all the way right then all the way left and then check the level again. If you notice foam, allow the vehicle to rest for a bit before reconducting the process. Make sure all hose connections are not leaking as well.
