2000 Dodge Viper Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How Are Axle Shafts Secured and How to Removal and Installation on 2000 Dodge Viper?
A: Four bolts and two straps secure the axle shafts at every end. The axle shaft strap bolts are fitted with a Loctite patch during initial installation and should always be replaced by new bolts or cleaned with Loctite thread locker, whenever you remove them. A middle internally splined sliding joint on the axle shafts handles changes in distance from the wheels brought by suspension and the yoke shaft's sliding motion on the output shaft's splines allows for adjustments when the wheels move. Because it covers the axle splines, the boot protects them from water on the road. There is no need to remove the entire car frame, just lift it on a hoist and remove the rear wheel. Replace both the inner and outer strap bolts with brand new ones or carefully clean them and use Loctite thread locker once you take them off or the axle shaft universal joint straps should also be changed, as they small deform during tightening and could decrease the clamp load, so it's better to change them. Second, remove the two outer axle shaft universal joint straps, then remove the two inner axle shaft joints and finally remove the shaft and its universal joints from the vehicle. After that, take out the axle shaft yoke nut and the axle shaft yoke. The installation process is the opposite of how you prepared for removal.
