2000 Dodge Viper Universal Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Universal Joint on 2000 Dodge Viper?
A: Begin serving and repairing the universal joint by cleaning both universal joint yokes with a cleaning solvent and wire brush and check them for damaging defects such as distortions, cracks and weary bearing cap bores; replace them if you find any. Lubricate the area using Extreme Pressure (EP), lithium base lubricant, set the spider into the yoke opening and then put in the seals and bearings. First, push the bearing caps into the yoke bores so they hold the spider and then use socket and vise to press them further, so the retaining clips can be fitted correctly. Attach the yoke to the propeller shaft using the indicated marks and align them when you have secured and installed the bearing cap retaining clips. Since these bolts are locked in at the beginning with Loctite, they should either be replaced or treated with Loctite thread locker when removed. When a drive shaft or axle shaft universal joint strap is removed, it should always be replaced, because a small amount of deformation occurs during installation and using the same strap may cause the clamp load on the universal joint cap to reduce.
