2000 Dodge Viper Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Does Drive Shaft Technology Enhance the Performance and How to Remove and Install on 2000 Dodge Viper?
A: A tubular aluminum propeller shaft carries the engine's torque on the Dodge Viper, with universal joints connecting it to the transmission. The first step is to remove the back universal joint bolts and straps, then slide the complete propeller shaft and its front yoke out of the transmission. Begin by sliding the front yoke into your transmission and then install both of the rear universal joint bolts. Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). Bolts along the drive shaft and axle shaft straps are installed with Loctite during assembly for initial retention; so, when removed, they need to be substituted or treated and cleaned with Loctite thread locker to avoid unwanted movement. Whenever either drive shaft or axle shaft universal joint straps are removed, the straps should be changed as the tightening leads to their slight deformation and this may weaken the clamp load on the universal joint cap.
