2000 Jeep Cherokee Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Axle Shaft on 2000 Jeep Cherokee?
A: Start by putting the vehicle's transmission in neutral and holding it up securely before trying any repairs. Disconnect the wheel and tire unit and then take off the brake drum properly. Eliminate any extra material stuck to the housing cover, then loosen the nut of the housing cover to remove the lubricant from the housing and axle before taking off the cover. Twist the differential case so you can get to the pinion mate shaft lock screw and then unscrew and remove both the shaft and lock screw. Carefully push the axle shaft into the transmission, then unthread the axle shaft C-lock. Inspect the seal on the axle shaft for fluids, as well as the roller bearing's surface on the shaft for brinelling, galling or pitting. If you notice anything, then replace the shaft, bearing and seal. Before installing the axle, grease the bearing and lip on the seal, place the axle shaft through the seal and bearing and hook it into the splines on the side gear, not touching the seal lip. Pull the C-lock onto the axle shaft and press outward to get it seated in the side gear. After that, insert the pinion shaft through the thrust washers and differential pinions until the hole in the shaft lines up with the hole in the differential case, lock it with Loctite and tighten the lock screw to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.) torque. Afterward, mount the cover, put in fluid, rejoin the brake drum, wheel and tire and bring the vehicle back down.
