2000 Jeep Cherokee Universal Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Universal Joint in a Double Cardan Joint Assembly on 2000 Jeep Cherokee?
A: Individual parts that are worn or leak on the Double Cardan Joint should be changed with the whole assembly. First, take out the propeller shaft. Lightly strike the outside of the bearing cap assembly with a soft drift to weaken the snap ring, then take out all of the bearing cap snap rings. Secure the link yoke in a socket on an arbor press or a vise, below the bearing cap. Make sure one bearing cap is at the top of the yoke, add the socket ring with a smaller diameter and press the top cap from the outside only until you can later grasp it with vise jaws, making sure to remove any grease fittings along the way. With the vise jaws, grip the bearing that sticks out and with a mallet and a drift, tap on the link yoke to remove the bearing cap. Turn over the assembly and follow the earlier steps to let go of the other bearing cap so you can remove the entire cross centering kit assembly and its spring. Push on the other bearing caps to finish taking the link yoke apart. While assembling, put the alignment marks of the link yoke and propeller shaft yoke in the same position. Before installing, add Extreme Pressure (EP) N.L.G.I. Grade 1 or 2 grease inside the yoke bores to help the process. Insert the cross into the propeller shaft yoke and then mount the bearing cap over the trunnion, lining it up with the yoke bore to make certain the needle bearings are in the upright position. Guide the bearing cap into the yoke bore almost completely, so a snap ring may be installed. On the reverse trunnion, install the bearing cap and then slide a snap ring in. Set the link yoke on the next two trunnions, insert the bearings again, press their caps on and put in the extra rings. Add the centering kit assembly into the link yoke, making certain the spring is in the right location. Put two bearing caps on each side of the cross at the trunnions, tuck the open trunnions into the yoke bores and tuck the bearing caps into the centering kit. Join the remaining two bearing caps and fit snap rings into their grooves with a light tap. Pull the joint so that it flexes past the middle and check if it snaps over-center as you move it in either direction. After that, affix the propeller shaft.
