2000 Jeep Cherokee Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Radiator on 2000 Jeep Cherokee?
A: Before working on the radiator, first disconnect the battery negative cable and remove its pressure cap. Undo the radiator grill mounting screws to get access to the radiator draincock. Fit the radiator petcock to the male end of a 24 inch long X 1/4 inch ID hose and lay the other end into a clean bucket to drain the radiator fluid. Unhook the power steering fluid reservoir from the fan shroud, pull off the electric cooling fan connector if it's there and remove the CRS hose at the bottom of the radiator. Following that, take out the four viscous fan/drive assembly nuts holding the pulley on the water pump, remove the fan drive and unscrew the four screws that hold the fan shroud to the core support. Get the electric fan and shroud out and next get rid of the radiator's upper crossmember. If there is air conditioning, take out the screws or nuts that hold the condenser to the radiator. Remove the upper and lower radiator hoses and if you have an automatic transmission, also remove and plug the lines to the transmission fluid cooler using Quick Connect Fitting Release Tool 6935. Raise the radiator straight away from the engine compartment and make sure the fins are not harmed as you remove it; remove any components from the old radiator if you are upgrading. Lift the radiator into the compartment and place the alignment dowels into the rubber grommet openings found in the radiator lower crossmember. Associate the condensing unit with the radiator by fixing the mounting brackets if your van includes air conditioning. Secure the radiator upper crossmember to the car by bolting it in place, then use a torque wrench to adjust the crossmember-to-isolator bolts to 10 Nm (86 inch lbs.) and if fitting, isolator to radiator bolts to 5 Nm (47 inch lbs.). Attach the radiator hoses from the top and the bottom and if the car is fitted, join the automatic transmission fluid cooler lines. Place the electric fan and shroud assembly in position, make sure the tab at the bottom of the fan shroud enters the slot at the bottom of the radiator bracket and tighten the bolts to 3 Nm (31 inch lbs.). Attach the cooling fan's electrical wiring, set the power steering reservoir into the fan shroud and replace the grill. Attach the negative battery cable again, add the right coolant to your cooling system and install the pressure cap. When done, check and top up the automatic transmission fluid (when available), turn on the engine and look all around for leaks.
