How to Service and Repair the Axle Shaft of the 198RBI on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

When service or repair of the rear axle of the 198RBI is required, first lift and support the vehicle, with the transmission put in neutral. Pull the wheel and tire off, then use a proper process to remove the brake caliper and rotor as well. Turning to the back of the axle flange, remove the nuts that are holding the axle retainer plate to the axle tube. Take out the Slide Hammer 7420, Adapter 6790 and appropriate nut or bolt and you might notice that the axle bearing race is loose in the axle tube. Installing is simple: insert the axle into the axle tube, connecting the flat area of the axle shaft to the plate. Put the studs from the retaining plate into both the brake backing plate and the axle tube flange and add nuts to secure the axle retaining plate to the tube. Tighten all the nuts to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Reattach the caliper and rotor and after that, install the wheel and tire. After that, fill the gear lubricant up to the desired level and lower the vehicle.
