2000 Jeep Wrangler Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Maintain and Repair a Water Pump on 2000 Jeep Wrangler?
A: It is important to check the fan blades and the viscous fan drive when fixing or servicing a water pump, as they can be damaged if the water pump was replaced because of an engine vibration problem. It's not necessary to drain the air conditioning system to remove the water pump. A reverse rotation water pump which is marked with an R on the back of its impeller, is used by every engine, but for some old ones, there might be forward (counterclockwise) rotation and mixing them up can cause overheating. The impeller is mounted in back of the pump assembly and when you service the pump you do so as a whole unit. Be sure to leave in place the block drain plug(s) and radiator draincock until the coolant has cooled and the pressure has been released to keep from getting serious burns. You should pour reusable coolant into a clean container if it is in clean condition. Begin with the small stuff: Take off the negative battery cable, let the coolant drain and loosen the four nuts that connect the fan pulleys to the water pump, but do not pull them out yet. Before removing the fan, the engine accessory drive belt should be removed. Make sure to turn the mounting nut on the thermal viscous fan drive/fan blade assembly counterclockwise, using a suitable fan wrench. Disconnect the power steering pump and make sure to use suitable tools when tightening constant tension clamps, while wearing safety eyewear. Unplug the water pump fitting from both the lower radiator hose and the heater hose and take off the four nuts and pulley from the fan blade assembly which is for a 2.5L engine. Keep the thermal viscous fan drive upright so silicone fluid does not get mixed with the lubricant. Unscrew the four bolts that hold the pump and take out the pump, making sure to remove and discard the old gasket, since one bolt is longer than the others. If you install a new pump, put the heater hose fitting in place with Mopar Thread Sealant With Teflon after cleaning the gasket surfaces and searchingfor damage. Fit the gasket so the silicone bead is facing the water pump and loop the gasketing bolts with a torque of 23 Nm (48 inch lbs.), so the shaft is able to move easily. Attach the hoses between the radiator and heater to the 2.5L engine, place the pulley on the water pump and add and tighten the fan with four nuts to 20 ft. lbs.. Reinstall the power steering pump, of the 4.0L engine, the fan and fan hub should be threaded into the water pump hub shaft. First, install the drive belt and tension it for the 2.5L engine, add coolant to the cooling system, look for leaks, connect the battery cable back, start the engine, warm it up and look again for any leaks.
