2001 Chrysler Concorde Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Shock Absorber in the Front Strut Assembly on 2001 Chrysler Concorde?
A: You should first remove the front strut from the vehicle to take it apart for repairs or servicing. You can use a strut spring compressor, a PSE W-7200 tool or an equivalent device to compress the coil spring, just as the manufacturer explains. You should not loosen the strut assembly's shaft nut until the coil spring is fully compressed. When replacing both struts, record the position of each coil spring and strut assembly by writing on them. Install the strut assembly on the compressor so that the strut clevis bracket is exposed on the anchor side and so the steering arm will not contact the compressor arm. Stretch the coil spring until the stress on the upper mount is gone and take the nut off the strut shaft using a Strut Nut Socket, Special Tool 6864, while you hold onto the shaft. Take out the mount above first, the clamp from the coil spring next and slide the strut out of the coil through the bottom. Before putting back the seat and bearing, upper spring isolator, dust boot or coil spring, verify that the flat found on the seat and bearing's inboard side is aligned with the strut. Slacken the tension in the coil spring, remove it, plus the jounce bumper cup and jounce bumper from the strut shaft. Check all parts of the strut assembly for damage and replace any that are outside their intended limits. To put the assembly together, insert the coil spring into the compressor in the proper place, add the upper spring isolator and dust shield back onto the bearing and then attach the bearing to the seat. Add the seat and bearing on the coil spring first and then top it with a spring isolator on the strut. After installing the jounce bumper and jounce bumper cup, feed the strut shaft into the coil spring until the lower spring seat hits the spring coil. Ensure the strut and seat are properly aligned with the bearing, then forget the clamp. Make sure you have put on the right set of upper mounts, since there are left and right versions. Fit the upper mount to the top of the strut shaft and loosen the retaining nut with your hand. Use the Strut Nut Socket along with a torque wrench to turn the strut shaft retaining nut to 94 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Release the pressure gradually from the coil spring so that the upper mount and seat track straight and level. After that, take out the clamp from the coil spring and strut and put the new strut assembly in place.
