2001 Chrysler LHS Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Timing Belt on 2001 Chrysler LHS?
A: First, take off the negative cable attached to the remote jumper terminal. After that, remove the radiator upper crossmember, radiator fan, all accessory drive belts, vibration damper on the crankshaft and front timing belt covers. If you plan to reuse the timing belt, mark how it should run so you put it back correctly. Twist the engine clockwise so that the crankshaft mark matches the TDC on the oil pump and the marks on the camshaft sprocket are between the rear cover marks. Make sure the camshaft sprocket timing mark is at the same location as the back timing cover marking and then take off the timing belt and its tensioner. Slowly press down on the tensioner, making sure the pins are facing correctly when changing the belt. First, open the covers over the front timing belt, bring the crankshaft sprocket to the TDC mark and then watch the position of the number 1 cylinder piston with a dial indicator during removal of the cams sprockets. Take out the camshaft retainer/thrust plates, attach Special Tools 6642 to align the camshafts and next remove the timing belt. Keep the camshaft sprocket held with a 36 mm box end wrench, remove the two holding bolts and pull out the camshaft sprockets. The timing belt should be taken off before using Special Tool L-4407-A to remove the crankshaft sprocket. Check the timing belt for any signs it is damaged or worn and replace it if that is the case. Before starting the belt, start by fixing the crankshaft sprocket on the TDC and fit the camshaft sprockets at the reference marks from the previous job. Now place the belt on the crankshaft clockwise. Secure the tensioner, ensuring it's tightened by 28 Nm and then remove the retaining pin to allow the tensioner to expand. Turn the crankshaft sprocket two revolutions and observe the timing marks; adjust it again if the marks do not match up. Dot in the front timing belt shields, crankshaft vibration damper, accessory drive belts, radiator fan, upper radiator crossmember and plug the negative cable. Attach the sprockets to the camshafts using new bolts, ensuring each side gets its proper type of bolt. Do not tighten them at this time. Route the timing belt so that it both joins the crankshaft sprocket and the tensioner and then tighten the bolts on the tensioner to 28 Nm. Set the number 1 piston at TDC, use a dial indicator, hold the camshaft sprocket hex using a 36 mm wrench and tighten the camshaft bolts to the required torque with one extra turn. Next, take out the dial indicator, connect the spark plug, remove Special Tool 6642, add the cam retainer/thrust plates and O-rings, tighten those, insert the timing belt covers, crankshaft vibration damper, the accessory drive belts and fill the cooling system's coolant. To install the crankshaft sprocket, apply Special Tools 6641 and C-4685-C1 to check the depth and then add the timing belt during installation.
