2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Camshaft on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Start the camshaft service and repair by removing the cylinder head cover, camshaft position sensor and camshaft target magnet. After that, take away the timing belt, both camshaft sprockets and the rear timing belt cover. The bearing caps are marked so that the outsides should be removed first. Only loosen the fasteners on the camshaft cap by taking care of one camshaft at a time, as the two camshafts do not match and the left (intake) camshaft (No. 6) has wider spacing. Before taking out the camshaft, make certain you identify it. With the camshaft out of the engine, apply oil to the journals and mount the camshaft without the cam follower assemblies. After that, install the camshaft by putting in the rear cam caps and tightening the screws to the set torque. Take out the dial indicator and then slide the camshaft to the end of its rear travel. The travel of the end play should fall between 0.05 - 0.15 mm (0.002 - 0.010 inch). If it's higher, look for wear and fix any worn parts. During the operation, keep the pistons away from top dead center. Leave the camshaft bearing journals, cam followers and camshafts unlubricated and then install both cam followers and camshafts. Install the right and left camshaft bearing caps No. 2-5 and right No. 6, tighten the M6 fasteners to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.), always following the correct sequence. Use Mopar Gasket Maker on No. 1 and left No. 6 bearing caps before you install them and tighten the M8 fasteners to 24 Nm. End caps should be put onto the camshaft bearings before the camshaft seals are installed. After that, attach the camshaft seals, rear timing belt cover, the camshaft sprockets, timing belt and cap it off with the camshaft target magnet and camshaft position sensor, making sure to install the cylinder head cover as the last step. Do the camshaft/crankshaft synchronization.
