2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Engine Mount Torque Strut Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Engine Mount Torque Struts on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: First, take off the bolts holding the upper engine mount torque strut to the shock tower bracket and engine mount bracket and if so, also remove the timing belt front upper cover, since the vehicle has A/C. Take out the upper engine mount torque strut, fit the new strut in place, move it away towards the right fender and replace the timing belt front upper cover if necessary. After that, insert the engine mount torque strut mounting bolts and follow the procedure for torque strut adjustment. Raise the lower engine mount torque strut vehicle on a hoist, then take out the accessory belt splash shield and the pencil strut. Coming next, throw away the lower strut after removing the bolts that secure it to the crossmember and bracket. Position the lower engine mount torque strut where it's supposed to go, fit in all the mounting bolts and do the torque strut adjustment process. At 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.), bolt in the pencil strut and take care of installing the accessory belt splash shield. After that, lift the vehicle once more to permit lowering it carefully. First, take out the pencil strut if you haven't already, then loosen the upper and lower attaching bolts directly on the suspension crossmember and shock tower bracket. Adjust the engine position using a floor jack that is placed on the transmission housing in front-make sure there isn't a lot of upward movement. Push up on the upper engine to move it backward on the engine mount bracket until the distance between the bolt and the hole is 119 mm (4.70 inch). Press the engine down firmly on the jack and tighten both bolts of the engine mount torque strut with a torque wrench to 118 Nm (87 ft. lbs.). Always remove the floor jack before installing the pencil strut once again and tightening the nuts to a torque of 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.).
