2001 Chrysler Town & Country Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Disassemble and Reassemble a Brake Caliper on 2001 Chrysler Town & Country?
A: The brake caliper should be both cleaned and thoroughly inspected before being taken apart. First, collapse one bushing on the rubber guide pin, pull it out from the other caliper mounting boss side and repeat for the other bushing. Because there is a high risk of personal injury, air should not be used to force a piston out of a caliper bore. The best method for removing the piston is to use the pressure of the car's brake system. Take the caliper off the rotor and hang it from a wire hook to ensure brake fluid stays away from both the rotor and the frame of your car. Separate the brakes shoes, insert a scrap piece of wood between the piston and the caliper fingers, then shallowly press the brake pedal. As soon as you finish the work, make sure the brake pedal is fully pressed while someone adds brake fluid. Remove the brake fluid flex hose from the caliper assembly and the vehicle, using only light pressure when you clamp the caliper in a vise to not deform it. Chuck the caliper in a vise with cushioned jaws, take out the piston dust boot and discard it, work the piston seal out of the piston hole with a plastic trim stick and discard the old seal. A gentler solvent such as alcohol or an appropriate one should be used to clean both the piston bore and any small passages in the piston body and once cleaned, remove debris using a lint-free cloth. Put your fingers on the mounting boss and, from behind, push the bushing in half and insert it-then unfold and push it in further so that each flange sits parallel to the next flange on the opposite side of the mount. Apply Mopar Dielectric Grease or a similar product, to the bushing as you take it apart and do the same for the other bushing. Do not attempt to use an older piston seal; put the fresh one in clean brake fluid and place it inside the caliper bore, turning it around with your fingers. Apply some clean brake fluid to the outside of the new piston boot and set it over the piston. When putting the piston into place, use the same amount of pressure all the way around the bore. Guide the piston into the caliper bore, making sure it is past the seal and then in the bottom and slide the dust boot into the counterbore of the caliper assembly's piston bore. Hammer and use the Installer along with a Special Handle C-4171 and Special Tool C-4689 or C-4842 to drive the boot into the counterbore. After that, attach the caliper and complete the bleeding of your brakes as needed.
