2001 Dodge Dakota Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can Drive Belt Tension Be Optimized for Peak Performance in Belt-Driven Engine Accessories on 2001 Dodge Dakota?
A: To maintain good performance of belt-driven engine accessories, the drive belt should be properly tensioned. Various adjustment gauges are around for testing serpentine or V-type belts and the steps indicated in the box must be followed. During belt tension checking, place the gauge in the middle section of the belt, between two pulleys, so it doesn't touch anything other than the belt. Belt tension needs to be controlled at the assembly where the power steering pump and idler pulley are bracketed together. Unplug the negative battery cable first. After that, free the bolts on the idler pulley and the tension adjusting pulley and take off the accessory drive belt. Make sure to inspect all pulleys prior to installation. The serpentine accessory drive belt needs to be installed properly to stop the wrong rotation of the water pump from overheating the engine. Put on the belt, then tighten the adjustment bolt to the correct tension using the belt tension gauge C-4162. After that, tighten the bolt on the idler pulley and check the belt again, fixing any problem areas if needed.
