2002 Dodge Dakota Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Drive Belt on 2002 Dodge Dakota?
A: Note that the drive belt installation and repair directions are based on the latest information, so use the Belt Routing Label in the engine compartment if it does not agree with the schematics. On vehicles that use a spring-loaded automatic belt tensioner to cover all belt setups, do not measure belt tension with a gauge. Start by using a socket/wrench on the pulley bolt and keep turning the tensioner clockwise until the belt loosens. Get the belt off the idler pulley before you remove it from the car. Make sure the accessory drive belt is installed properly, avoiding the engine from overheating because of the wrong water pump speed; use the correct length of belt. Almost all the pulleys should hold a drive belt, but the idler pulley should not have one, since it's found near the A/C compressor and the generator. Again, connect a socket/wrench to the bolt on the mounting pulley of the automatic tensioner and rotate it clockwise. Put the belt above the idler, allow the tensioner to move back, remove the wrench and make certain the belt is on every pulley correctly. Make sure to look at where the belt indexing marks are located.
