2001 Dodge Durango Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service the 9 1/4 Axle Shaft on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: First, park the vehicle in neutral, lift the rear end and get ready to work on the rear axle 9 1/4. First, take off the wheel and tire and then remove the brake drum. Take out the lubricant by draining it when you have the cover removed. Turn the differential case to locate the pinion mate shaft lock screw, remove the screw and then take out the shaft from the case. Pull the axle shaft in toward you to take off the axle shaft C-lock and extract the axle shaft slowly to keep the seal and bearing in the housing from damage. While installing, apply gear lubricant to the bearing bore and onto the seal lip, push the axle shaft through both and join it to the side gear splines to stop it from damaging the shaft seal. Push the C-lock against the end of the axle shaft so that it seats itself in the side gear. After that, attach one end of the pinion shaft to the differential case by inserting it with two thrust washers over the differential pinions, aligning the holes as you do so. Attach the lock screw to the threads and fasten it until you reach a torque of 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.). After the differential cover is back on, fill it with gear lubricant, then set the brake drum, wheel and tire in place. After cutting, get rid of the support and let the vehicle drop.
