2001 Dodge Durango Universal Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair a Universal Joint on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: After that, service and repair a single cardan universal joint is done after removing the propeller shaft. Lay a cloth over the bearing cap assembly and carefully tap its outside to cause the slip ring to come out and then remove both snap rings. Clip the yoke on an arbor press or vise and insert a large-enough socket beneath the bearing cap, checking that the grease fitting is positioned upward. Press a socket that is wider than the upper bearing cap around the upper bearing cap and down the yoke to pop off the lower bearing cap. Should the bearing cap not free when hand pulled, hit the yoke ear close to the bearing cap to help remove it. Lay the yoke over so the opposite bearing cap is on bottom, straighten the cross in the open hole and gently push the end of the cross to release and remove that cap. While the cross or bearing cap is being installed, check that they remain straight, because scoring the walls of the yoke bore must be avoided. For assembly, make sure you use EP N.L.G.I. Grade 1 or 2 grease rubbed into the inside of the yoke bores. Position the lube fitting on the cross up into the yoke and then set a bearing cap over the trunnion, making sure the needle bearings are standing properly. Place the bearing cap into the yoke bore so tightly that a snap ring will fit and then place the snap ring. Go through the same process for the second bearing cap and if the joint feels stiff or tight, hit the yoke with a soft hammer to set the needle bearings. After that, apply grease to the lube fitting if available and reinstall the propeller shaft.
