2001 Dodge Durango Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: To work on the timing cover, detach the negative battery cable and empty the cooling system. Get rid of the serpentine belt, water pump, power steering pump, vibration damper and fuel lines. Start by loosening the bolts on the oil pan and the first bolt on every side and then remove the cover bolts. Be careful when you take out the chain case cover and gasket; never harm the oil pan gasket in the process. Take care not to destroy the oil seal and crankshaft surface as you remove it with a tool. During installation, look for three conditions: clean mating surfaces for the cover and cylinder block, no burrs on the parts and a clean surface where the water pump will be installed. Put the chain case cover back on with a new cover gasket and make sure not to harm the oil pan gasket while doing so. Use a small quantity of Mopar GEN II Silicone Rubber to connect the gaskets; just tighten the bolts using your fingers. Make sure the smaller side of the oil seal is on Front Oil Seal Installation Tool 6635, then set it into the groove and put the tool and seal on the crankshaft. Before setting the seal on the crankshaft, fasten the 4 lower chain case cover bolts to 13 Nm (10 ft. lbs.) to stop the engine from tipping over and use the vibration damper bolt to seal the crankshaft in position. Push in the 4 bolts to adjust the front cover assembly and tighten up the chain case cover bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Take out the vibration damper bolt and seal installation tool, put the vibration damper first, then the water pump, power steering pump and finally secure the serpentine belt. Secure the fan to the block, fit the fan shroud and fasten it all by tightening bolts to 11 Nm (95 in. lbs.). Put fresh coolant in the cooling system and link the negative cable to the battery again.
