2001 Dodge Durango Timing Chain Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Chain on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: The first thing to do when servicing the timing chain is to take the battery's negative cable off and remove the Timing Cover. At this stage, screw in the vibration damper bolt finger tight and use the breaker bar and correct socket to rotate the crankshaft. After that, unbolt the camshaft sprocket bolt and remove all the parts found on the chain and sprockets. To install the sprockets, first put them both on a bench so their timing marks are aligned with an imaginary center line running through the bores. Put the timing chain across both sprockets and move the crankshaft and camshaft so that they all connect with the keyways. After lifting the sprockets and chain, slide both sprockets onto their shafts, pulling them against each other and check the timing marks using a straightedge. Screw in the camshaft bolt and tighten it to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.) torque. The distance between the camshaft and the plate should be 0.051-0.152 mm (0.002-0.006 inch) for a new plate and 0.002 inch for a used one; if not, put on a new thrust plate. The last step is to place the timing chain cover in place.
