2001 Dodge Durango Intake Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What Are the Key Differences in Servicing and Repairing Exhaust Valves and Intake Valves on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: You should lift up the cylinder head first to get access to the valve. Press the valve springs with Valve Spring Compressor Tool MD-998772A and adapter 6716A, then withdraw the valve retaining locks, valve spring retainers, valve stem seals and valve springs. Before taking out the valves, fix any burrs from the lock grooves on the stem and ensure you know which valves go where once you remove them. Clean each valve well and throw away any that have become burned, warped or cracked. Use a good guide cleaner to get rid of carbon and varnish inside the valve guides. When valve stem wear is over 0.051 mm (0.002 inch), you should replace the valve. Apply lubrication oil to the valve stems outside and then push them into the cylinder head. If you find that the valves or seats have been reground, you should check the height of the valve stems; if the valve is too tall, replace the cylinder head. Cover each valve guide with a new seal and then position the valve spring and its retainer. Insert Valve Spring Compressor Tool MD-998772A and accessory 6716A to compress the springs, insert the locks and remove the tool. If the valves have been ground, check the installed height by measuring the gap from the bottom of the spring seat in the head to the bottom of the spring retainer or from the top of the spacer if you put one in. If the spring is taller than 42.86 mm (1-11/16 inch), add a 1.587 mm (1/16 inch) spacer into the head counterbore to lower the spring to the normal range of 41.27 to 42.86 mm (1-5/8 to 1-11/16 inch). The last step is to put in the cylinder head.
