2001 Dodge Grand Caravan Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install Brake Pads with Disc/Disc and Disc/Drum Brakes on 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: To replace the disc brake shoes on vehicles that have disc/disc brakes, support the vehicle, take out the front tires and wheel assemblies and remove both rear brake drums. First work on the caliper on one side by loosening the anti-rattle clip and the two guide pin bolts from the outboard side, making sure to support the caliper from the other side so the hose doesn't break. Hold the caliper by a wire or cord from the front strut, then remove the shoe on the outer side of the brake from the caliper adapter and pull the inner part of the brake back from the caliper piston to free the retaining clip. Do the same thing on the other side of your cloth. To service disc/drum brakes, first lift your vehicle, take out the wheel and tire assembly and then get rid of the two brake caliper guide pin bolts. Take the disc brake caliper off the adapter and hang it aside, being careful not to stretch the brake hose too far, then take out the brake shoes. To set disc/disc brake shoes, begin on one side, pull back the caliper piston as far as possible, slide off the paper from the gasket and insert the new inboard brake shoe neatly into the caliper piston. Apply Mopar Multipurpose Lubricant to the caliper adapter, then put the new outboard brake shoe into the adapter against the rotor. Set the brake caliper over the rotor and adapter, add the caliper guide pin bolts and tighten to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.) but be careful to avoid cross-threading. Put in the anti-rattle clip, reinstall the wheel and tire assembly and tighten the wheel mounting nuts one by one to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Perform the maintenance tasks the same on the opposite side, get the car down, press the brake pedal a few times to set the shoes, verify and correct the brake fluid and try using the brakes while driving the vehicle. Start by inserting the shoes into the anti-rattle clips in the adapter, press the caliper piston partway, install the caliper over the shoes, properly line the caliper guide pin bolts, tighten them to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.). After that, place the tire and wheel back on the vehicle, let it down, press on the brake pedal to fill the brakes with fluid, check if the level is correct and perform a road test.
