2001 Dodge Grand Caravan Intake Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Do Exhaust Valves and Intake Valves Impact the Machining and Inspection of Valve Seats on 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: The valves and their seats are machined to precise angles when made. Check the remaining clearance between the valves after they have been refaced. The metal you remove during refacing should come only from the valve seat and not from the cylinder head. Properly reseating the stones depends on choosing the right valve guide pilot. Using a dial indicator, check that the concentricity of the valve seat is not more than 0.051 mm (0.002 inch) as measured by the total indicator reading. Coat the surface of the seat with Prussian blue to locate any contact points; then, while lightly rotating the valve, press it down to ensure good fit. When the blue reaches the valve face center, contact is adequate. For transfers at the upper edge, reduce the valve seat with a 15-dome stone; if they are at the bottom, increase the valve seat with a 65-dome stone. If the angle and width of the new valves are correct, worn or burned valves seats can be adjusted; however, when these are not met, the cylinder head must be changed. Intake and exhaust seats should have a width of between 1.50 mm and 2.00 mm (0.059 - 0.078 inch). After you are finished grinding the valve faces or seats, fit the valve into the cylinder head and check the valve height from the tip to where the spring securing pin is. After removing the valve, grind the end just right, checking for marks and regrind the valve chamfer if any marks appear. After you are done with the valve and seat, check how far below the level of the spring seat the bottom of the retainer is. Should the height be greater than what's required, add a 0.794 mm (0.0312 inch) spacer into the head counterbore to get the spring height within the accepted range.
